Children's Oral Health - Super Duper Party Troopers

October 26th, 2012

The Children's Oral Health English and Spanish PSAs aim to motivate parents to take action to reduce their children's risk of oral disease by making sure their kids are brushing their teeth for two minutes, two times a day.

The PSAs feature silly activities that kids do throughout the day, such as watching a funny online video and playing video games, in an effort to communicate the importance of taking the time to brush twice a day for two minutes.

How much do you know about your toothbrush?

October 22nd, 2012

Taking care of your smile is nothing new! People have been brushing their teeth for thousands of years. In fact, the first “toothbrush” was created around 3000BC! Ancient civilizations used a thin twig with a frayed edge to rub against their teeth for cleaning.

The first toothbrush with bristles – similar to today’s toothbrushes – was invented in 1498 in China. Brushes were made out of bone or bamboo with bristles made from the hairs on the back of a hog’s neck.

It wasn’t until 1938 that the first nylon bristle toothbrush was introduced and people quickly became aware of practicing good oral hygiene.

Here are some other interesting facts about your toothbrush (and toothpaste):
• Most people are said to use blue toothbrushes over any other color
• The first toothpaste was used in 500 BC in China and India
• On average, children smile about 400 times per day
• Your toothbrush should be replaced every two months
• The first known toothpaste was used in 1780, Crest was introduced in 1955 and Colgate in 1873

Just in time for Halloween, the ADA’s “Stop Zombie Mouth” campaign is in full swing!

The Association is partnering with PopCap Games, makers of the popular “Plants vs. Zombies” video game, for the campaign to improve oral health habits among children and their families.  “Stop Zombie Mouth” is a fun Halloween promotion that includes trading cards with tips to keep teeth healthy and redemption codes for a free Plants vs. Zombies game download. The cards are inspired by the game’s “fundead” characters and others developed for the campaign called the “Putrid Posse.”

October is National Orthodontic Health Month!

October 2nd, 2012

Happy October! For those who don't know, it’s National Orthodontic Health Month.

Our team realizes that this month-long event is a great opportunity for us to raise awareness about the importance of oral hygiene. National Orthodontic Health Month also aims to recognize the dedicated work of orthodontists and other dental professionals.

To avoide orthodontic emergencies, our team recommends that patients avoid the following Halloween treats, or recipes with these ingredients:

• Caramel
• Nuts
• Popcorn (including un-popped kernels)
• Taffy
• Jelly beans
• Hard pretzels
• Licorice
• Bubblegum
• Ice

Avoiding the above will help ensure that you don't encounter any unwanted orthodontic issues! If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call, ask us on Facebook, or ask our team during your visit this month!
